Last fall we donated $500 for the group's youth scholarship fund. Each year, the group has been growing its native plant nursery. 🏵️

Native plants are a great drought and wildfire resilient way to bring more birds and pollinators into your garden and help them thrive in the wild. 🐦🦋🐝🐞

"They are essential to retaining our native pollinators including monarch butterflies. They are also important to bird habitat. They're gorgeous and don’t need pesticides or fertilizers. We're losing so much wild habitat we have to continue to grow natives in our gardens," said Treasurer Jeanne Wilson. 🌎🌳

Let's help our friends from Nevada City Rotary be successful with their soft plastic recycling program by keeping trash out of the bin! 🌎

Thanks to the Rotarians, now BriarPatch shoppers can recycle clean, stretchable plastic film not accepted by Waste Management.

A recycling bin has been set up in the store near customer service for the following soft and stretchable plastic film items: grocery bags, bread bags, bubble wrap, dry cleaning bags, newspaper sleeves, ice bags, plastic shipping envelopes, Ziploc and other clear zipping food storage bags, cereal bags, case overwrap, salt bags, pallet wrap and stretch film, wood pellet bags and produce bags.

The plastic must be CLEAN, DRY and FREE OF FOOD RESIDUE, and it needs to STRETCH when you poke a finger into it. Rotarians collect bags twice a week and hand sort them, which can be time-consuming if mixed with unacceptable refuse. Depositing garbage in the bins makes extra work for our hard-working plastic recycling heroes! 🦸‍♂️🦸‍♀️

Last November, Christine Newsom chairperson of an environmental committee for the group came up with the pilot project to team up with Trex and turn hundreds of pounds of soft plastics into decking and patio furniture. 🏖️😎

BriarPatch is one of several collection locations in Nevada County, and the project is so popular volunteers can hardly keep up with it. They surpassed their six-month goal of collecting 500 pounds in the first three months! 👏

“The public response to our plastics collection program has been amazing,” says Rotarian Robin Milam. “Clearly this plastics recycling collection is a project our community wants to support!”

The Sierra Harvest Sustainable Food & Farm Conference has an exciting new format for 2022: On-Farm Field Days featuring farmer-to-farmer education, hands-on skill-building, practical tools beginning farmers and ranchers and networking opportunities.

Sliding scale fees are available through registration with scholarships available for farmers and veterans. BIPOC & LGBTQA+ farmers are strongly encouraged to apply.

Researchers at UCLA have identified 65 species of animals who make "play vocalizations," or what we would consider laughter.

Along with a long list of primate species, domestic cows and dogs, foxes, seals, mongooses and three bird species are prone to laughter as well.
